Why Joseph Beuys and his dead hare live on, 2019

How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare was a solo performance by Beuys in 1965. Beuys was seated on a stool, protectively cradling the deceased hare akin to the Madonna in a pietà. Hare’s Grave was characteristic of Beuys’ pioneering use of materials unprecedented in the history of sculpture (1964). I translate and re-contextualise Beuys’ artworks to rethink today’s uncannily familiar crises and initiate a dialogue with Beuys’ spiritual concepts and every viewer.
